Last year over in Burbank, LA, within Warner Bros,? DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns put a team together that included a number of recently-made-redundant DC Comics editors. And no one talked about it.

Until now.

Titled DC Entertainment Creative Affairs, the group has a rather roving brief. Working on multimedia exploitation such as animation and live action, including? DC Nation, Young Justice, Brave & Bold, Smallville?s final season (including another Geoff Johns? episode), the Sandman TV show and other not-yet-announced projects up and running for development (including a possible animated adaptation of Frank Miller?s Dark Knight Returns), it?s basically a Bullpen for a different multi-media world and a veritable West Coast Justice League Of DC Comics.

Working alongside DC Entertainment Creative Services, thy work in partnership and collaboration with other Warner Bros groups including the Warner Pictures, Warner Home Video, Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment, Cartoon Network, WBTV and Warner Bros. Consumer Products, further embedding DC into Warners as a whole.

So what team members has Geoff assembled? And, as with any super team, do they all have different abilities to be utlised as the team leader see fit? Okay, here are the people I?ve been told about.

Creative Director for DC Entertainment is ex-DC Comics Senior Group Editor Mike Carlin, liaising with WB Animation, he is writing and developing outlines, character and concept summaries based on DC Comics, Vertigo and MAD Magazine properties for all DC Entertainment platforms. This includes reviewing scripts for animation and TV projects both in production and pre-production.

We can?t wait for the Doctor Light direct-to-DVD movie.

The development team also includes Creative Executives ex-DC editor Adam Schlagman and ex-Vertigo editor Pornsak Pichetshote, working on projects based around the DC Universe and Vertigo imprints respectively. Adam is credited as such in Green Lantern today.

Two Creative Associates in the group are ex-DC associate editor, Sean Ryan and Aria Moffly, who used to be assistant to ex-DC Senior VP Greg Novek who worked on all the DC movies and TV shows until last year.

John Morgan from the licensing publishing side of DC,? has become Creative Director of Interactive for DC Entertainment, developing games and related properties based on DC?s properties. He?s the fellow who, at a previous publisher, acquired and edited the Sookie Stackhouse series that became HBO?s True Blood?

He was joined by Creative Associates Shawn Kittelsen who worked at DC on gaming development and Victoria Setian who worked at DC marketing DC?s games. They concentrate on the likes of Arkham City, Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters and the in-development Fables.

Kevin Kiniry, who had been part of DC?s licensing department, is now the new Executive Director of Creative Services.

Jim Fletcher, Design Director of DC Direct, now heads up Creative Services, working with previous DC Direct Art Directors Bryon Webster and Evan Metcalf, and Art Director, Product Design and Engineering, Shawn Knapp, former DC Direct Product Engineer. DC Direct?s Brian Walters has been promoted to Associate Art Director.

Senior Art Director at DC, Janice Walker is now Senior Art Director, Creative Services with a focus on overall media design, while DC Graphic Designer Aram Isaacs has been promoted to Assistant Art Director.

So that?s skill sets in comics, games, TV, movies, toys, statues, photography, design, multi-media and interactive all together in one Burbank building.

At the time of the redundancies last year I expressed surprise at, say, the departure of Pornsak, considering how well he was regarded by DC and Warners, and I was even more surprised that no other comics publisher snapped him up on his departure.

But seems that a number of redundancies last year were in essence, negotiated transfers from one Warner wing to another.

And in a further twist, a number of the now-ex-editors working for this new department have been hired by Eddie Berganza to write comics involved in the Flashpoint crossover. I understand that this is more of a one-off affair however, seen as an opportunity for career development and a way of using people very intimate with the universe of characters as they get all changed around, while crossover showrunner Geoff Johns looks on?

So that?s the team. As far as I can make out.

Apple confirms it's working on a traffic service, moving away from Google Maps?

It wasn't the main thrust of its "Q&A on Location Data" this morning, but Apple did also make a bit of news while it tried to ease those privacy concerns about how it's handling your data. The company says it "is now collecting anonymous traffic data to build a crowd-sourced traffic database," and that it's hoping to provide iPhone users with an "improved traffic service in the next couple of years." It didn't divulge much more than that, unfortunately, but that little detail lines up with some other navigation-related developments out of the company as of late. It acquired web mapping firm Poly9 last July (in addition to Google Maps rival Placebase in late 2009), and just last month a couple of job postings revealed that it was looking for folks to "radically improve" the iOS Maps experience. Add all those together and it's starting to look an awful lot like a shift away from Google Maps in favor of an all-Apple solution -- much like how the company relied on Skyhook until it could roll its own WiFi geolocation service.

PlayStation Breach Has Activision CEO 'Concerned'

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick is ?really concerned? about Sony shutting down its PlayStation Network two weeks ago because hackers stole customer data, he told The Wall Street Journal on Monday.

Kotick said Call of Duty can still be played alone by PlayStation 3 gamers, but ?people are really disappointed? they can?t play with others on the network, he told the Journal.

Sony hasn?t said when the network would be back online.

Kotick?s remarks came as Activision Blizzard reported a 32% surge in net income in the first quarter to $503 million on revenue that rose 11% to $1.5 billion.

The better results were driven by the Call of Duty and World of Warcraft franchises, management said.

Released five months ago, Call of Duty: Black Ops has become the best-selling game in the U.S. and Europe for the Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms and for the PC.

Toshiba to launch Android tablet in June

Toshiba will launch its first tablet computer in late June in Japan and at around the same time in global markets, the company said Wednesday.

With the tablet, Toshiba will kick off an attempt to gain a 10 percent share of the global tablet market by 2013, said Masaaki Oosumi, president of Toshiba's digital products and services unit, at a Tokyo news conference. The company is one of the oldest and most well-known names in laptop computers, so its entry is likely to further raise competition in an increasingly active market for tablets.

The tablet PC, which is based on the Android 3.0 operating system, was first previewed at January's International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, but the company did not announce a launch date or price at that time. (A video version of this report, including shots of the Toshiba tablet, is available on YouTube.)

It will cost around ?60,000 ($730) in Japan. Overseas pricing was not disclosed.

The tablet has a 10.1-inch screen and will run on Nvidia's Tegra 2 processor. The LED-backlit screen has 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, and the tablet will be equipped with front and back-facing cameras, and connectors for USB, Mini USB, HDMI and an SD Card slot. Networking will be via 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1. It has 16 gigabytes of storage space and 1 gigabyte of memory.

It will also have a removable battery pack, and Toshiba will offer a long-life battery as an option. Typical battery life of the tablet was not disclosed.

In Japan, it will be marketed under the "Regza" brand name that Toshiba uses for its flat-screen televisions.

Toshiba becomes the latest of Japan's major electronics brands to enter the tablet market. NEC has launched a tablet aimed at vertical markets and Sharp's Galapagos tablet is an Android-based e-book reader with web browsing ability.

Sony is also developing a tablet PC, but the company isn't saying much about its plans. It's due sometime later this year.

A month after the tablet PC launches, Toshiba will begin selling a laptop PC with a screen that can produce the illusion of three dimensions without requiring the user to wear special glasses.

The computer, which will form part of its Qosmio range, has a thin lens in front of the display that can aim a slightly different version of the computer's image towards the user's right and left eyes. Such lens systems sometimes require the user to sit in a certain place to get the 3D effect, but the Toshiba laptop uses a camera to track the user's eyes so it can dynamically adjust the 3D image.

Toshiba didn't announce a price for the laptop or launch details outside of Japan.

In 1958, James Hanover Thompson and his friend David Simpson ? both African-American, both children ? were accused of kissing a girl who was white. They were arrested, and taken to jail. Prosecutors sought a stiff penalty ? living in reform school until they were 21.

"The Kissing Case," as it came to be known, drew international media attention to Monroe, N.C., at the time. But since then, it's been largely forgotten. Even the Thompson family rarely talked about it. Recently, James Hanover Thompson sat down with his younger brother, Dwight, and told him what happened.

"We were playing with some friends over in the white neighborhood, chasing spiders and wrestling and stuff like that," James says.

"One of the little kids suggested that one of the little white girls give us a kiss on the jaw," he says. "The little girl gave me a peck on the cheek, and then she kissed David on the cheek. So, we didn't think nothing of it. We were just little kids."

But the little girl mentioned the kiss back home, and her parents were furious; the police set out in search of the boys.

"The police car pulled up, and they said, 'We're taking y'all to jail,'" James says. "I didn't know what was going on. But when we got down to the police station, we understand that they said that we had raped a little white girl."

The two boys ? James, 9, and David, 7 ? were charged with molestation. And their punishment started immediately.

"They uh... took us down in the bottom of the police station to a cell. And they had us handcuffed ? they started beating us," James says. "They was beating us to our body, you know? They didn't beat us to the face, where nobody could see it; they just punched us all in the stomach, and back and legs. We was hollering and screaming. We thought they was gonna kill us."

James says that he and David were held in jail for about six days before they were allowed to see their parents. And soon after, they were sent to reform school, with the possibility that they might be released before they turned 21.

News reports of the case spread far and wide ? it became the "Kissing Case" in many headlines. Officials from the NAACP and Eleanor Roosevelt were among those who reportedly asked North Carolina Gov. Luther Hodges to show clemency in the case.

Eventually, the governor pardoned James and David, and they were released after spending three months in detention.

James' sister, Brenda Lee Graham, also spoke about those days with Dwight, who was born in 1961, and grew up not knowing much about the incident.

"Mom was a nervous wreck. She didn't sleep," Brenda tells Dwight. "She would be up walking the floors and praying."

Remembering what life was like for the rest of the family while the authorities were holding James, Brenda says, "I remember that at night, you could see them burning crosses..."

"Right there in the front yard?" Dwight asks.

"Right there in the front yard," Brenda says. "And my mom and them, they would go out in the morning, and sweep bullets off our front porch."

James says that each week during his detention, he was sent to a psychologist. "And he'd tell me, 'They should have castrated y'all.' I mean, it was just something," he says.

Brenda says that when James came back home, "it was like seeing somebody different, that you didn't even know. He never talked about what he went through there. But ever since then, his mind just hadn't been the same."

And, James says, while he and David were pardoned, they never got an apology, either.

"I still feel the hurt and the pain from it," he says. "And nobody never said, 'Hey, look, I'm sorry what happened to y'all. It was wrong.'"

He has spent most of his adult life in and out of prison for robbery.

"I always sit around and I wonder, if this hadn't happened to me, you know, what could I have turned out to be?" James says. "Could I have been a doctor? Could I have went off to some college, or some great school? It just destroyed our life."

Brenda says, "My brother and his friend had to suffer on account of that. And I mean, they suffered. From one kiss. I've thought about that. It all started with a kiss."

Pakistani journalist Ahmed Rashid says the recent capture of Taliban military commander Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar raises the question: Why now?

"His whereabouts were known for years," says Rashid. "Speculations from Kabul [indicate that] the CIA could've discovered his whereabouts and insist [Pakistani officials] arrest him. But it was also well known that he was in touch with the authorities having talks through representatives."

Baradar's arrest ? and the new military tactics used by both sides ? has implications beyond Pakistan's borders. Rashid tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross that the capture may complicate ongoing negotiations between Saudi officials and the Taliban leadership.

"[Afghan President Hamid] Karzai, through all the criticism for lack of governance and corruption, one thing he's done is talk to the Taliban leadership," says Rashid. "These talks did lead to further talks ? and senior leaders [of the Taliban] actually came to Saudi Arabia and met with Saudi officials and in fact, it's been speculated that Baradar himself was there meeting with officials."

Rashid says that Baradar's arrest may have a long term crippling effect on the Taliban ? but even so, the Taliban will remain difficult to defeat using only military force.

"[The Taliban] have penetrated the fabric of Northeast Afghanistan," Rashid says. "They're in the fabric of the country." He adds that defeating the Taliban would involve killing "large numbers of Pashtuns," an ethnic group with a history in southeastern Afghanistan.

Rashid, who is based in Lahore, is the author of several books, including Jihad: The Rise of Militant Islam in Central Asia , Taliban: Militant Islam, Oil, and Fundamentalism in Central Asia and, most recently, Descent into Chaos: The United States and the Failure of Nation Building in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Central Asia.

Discovery Could Make Fuel Cells Much Cheaper

One of the biggest issues with hydrogen fuel cells, aside from the lack of fueling infrastructure, is the high cost of the technology. Fuel cells use a lot of platinum, which is frightfully expensive and one reason we?ll pay $50,000 or so for the hydrogen cars automakers say we?ll see in 2015.

That might soon change. Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory have developed a platinum-free catalyst in the cathode of a hydrogen fuel cell that uses carbon, iron and cobalt. That could make the catalysts ?two to three orders of magnitude cheaper,? the lab says, thereby significantly reducing the cost of fuel cells.

Although the discovery means we could see hydrogen fuel cells in a wide variety of applications, it could have the biggest implications for automobiles.

Despite the auto industry?s focus on hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles ? driven in part by the Obama administration?s love of cars with cords ? several automakers remain convinced hydrogen fuel cells are the best alternative to internal combustion.

Hydrogen offers the benefits of battery-electric vehicles ? namely zero tailpipe emissions ? without the drawbacks of short range and long recharge times. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are electric vehicles; they use a fuel cell instead of a battery to provide juice. You can fill a car with hydrogen in minutes, it?ll go about 250 miles or so and the technology is easily adapted to everything from forklifts to automobiles to buses.

Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and Honda are among the automakers promising to deliver hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in 2015. Toyota has said it has cut the cost of fuel cell vehicles more than 90 percent by using less platinum ? which currently goes for around $1,800 an ounce ? and other expensive materials. It plans to sell its first hydrogen vehicle for around $50,000, a figure Daimler has cited as a viable price for the Mercedes-Benz F-Cell (pictured above in Australia).

Fifty grand is a lot of money, especially something like the F-Cell ? which is based on the B-Class compact ? or the Honda FCX Clarity.

In a paper published Friday in Science, Los Alamos researchers Gang Wu, Christina Johnston and Piotr Zelenay, joined by Karren More of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, outline their platinum-free cathode catalyst.

The catalysts use carbon, iron and cobalt. The researchers say the fuel cell provided high power with reasonable efficiency and promising durability. It provided currents comparable to conventional fuel cells, and showed favorable durability when cycled on and off ? a condition that quickly damages inferior catalysts.

The researchers say the carbon-iron-cobalt catalyst completed the conversion of hydrogen and oxygen into water, rather than producing large amounts of hydrogen peroxide. They claim the catalyst created minimal amounts of hydrogen peroxide ? a substance that cuts power output and can damage the fuel cell ? even when compared to the best platinum-based fuel cells. In fact, the fuel cell works so well the researchers have filed a patent for it.

The researchers did not directly quantify the cost savings their cathode catalyst offers, which would be difficult because platinum surely would become more expensive if fuel cells became more prevalent. But the lab notes that iron and cobalt are cheap and abundant, and so the cost of fuel cell catalysts is ?definitely two to three orders of magnitude cheaper.?

?The encouraging point is that we have found a catalyst with a good durability and life cycle relative to platinum-based catalysts,? Zelenay said in a statement. ?For all intents and purposes, this is a zero-cost catalyst in comparison to platinum, so it directly addresses one of the main barriers to hydrogen fuel cells.?

NEW YORK - Starz LLC president and CEO Chris Albrecht has promoted Film Roman's Dana Booton to the new position of general manager, head of production of the animation studio behind The Simpsons, King of the Hill and other TV shows.

She was previously vp of? production. She was most recently the executive in charge of Film Roman's current Marvel Entertainment production projects - Ultimate Spider-Man, The Super Hero Squad Show and The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Gerard Smith, who played bass for the Brooklyn-based band TV on the Radio, has died today after a battle with lung cancer. He was 36 years old. The sad news arrived this afternoon via the band's website, which posted this brief note:

We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer. Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly.

Smith joined the band in 2005, and played on its three most recent albums, including Nine Types of Light, which was released last week. In March, the band announced via its website that Smith had been diagnosed with lung cancer after the album was finished. Though his bandmates were touring to support Nine Types of Light, Smith had stayed home to receive treatment. Upcoming concerts in Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis and Denver have been canceled.

'The Good Wife' Creators Tease Next Three Episodes and Changes for Season 3

It's good to be The Good Wife.

Creators Robert and Michelle King?have experienced critical acclaim that, as of late, has been reserved for ambitious cable fare, but the serialized CBS drama -- which returns for the last three episodes of its sophomore season on Tuesday -- seems to be the exception to the rule. But even with critical raves, the hourlong series, toplined by TV veteran Julianna Margulies as the regal "good wife" Alicia to the scandal-plagued politican Peter, the network has yet to officially pick up the solid ratings performer for a third season.?

With signs pointing to a renewal, thanks to regular Alan Cumming closing?a three-year deal with the studio to remain through a fifth round, the Kings are of course, cautiously optimistic.?Even so, changes are bound to take place next year if and when the official announcement comes. Robert and Michelle King spoke to The Hollywood Reporter to discuss what the future holds days after filming wrapped on the New York-based production -- and how the Kalinda-Peter bombshell will affect the series going forward.

The Hollywood Reporter: Will the upcoming finale end on a cliffhanger like last season?

Robert King: I will say this: Michelle and I are not fans of cliffhangers. [Laughs] Even last year, we didn?t think it would be seen as a cliffhanger as it was because we thought so much of Alicia?s life rested on unresolved beats that it would just play like it. It will be less of what last year was. We don?t want to play that schtick too much.

THR: What indication have you received from the network about The Good Wife's chances for a pickup?

RK: They?re in negotiations with all the actors, which you can read one of several ways. They?re trying to tie people down for longer runs, which is a good sign. The bottom could fall out any moment but at least at this point, the studio and the network are very happy with the creative direction of the show.

THR: With Alan Cumming recently signing a new three-year deal to remain on the show and assuming the show will be back, how will his?role expand next season?

RK: One of the things that we?re doing with the last episode -- instead of making a cliffhanger -- is making it very evocative of the direction for next year. It?s much more a sense of the last episode is lining up all the ways that we would plan to go next year.?It?s not wrong to mention that Alan Cumming, there?s an attempt to bring him in-house into Lockhart/Gardner. There is this valley in between campaigns where [political consultants] need to get paid and they have several ways to do it. One way is they start their own lobby and consulting firm, the other is the Democratic Committee sometimes sets them up at an established law firm and gives them office space, access to clients. It?s also a way to start prepping for the next campaign. We?re trying to play into the reality of what happens to a political consultant in between big campaigns. Alan Cumming is so good in that role, but what we love to do is see how the relationships change once it?s slightly more work-related too.

THR: Will there be more pressure to perform next season?

RK: We?re trying to be more responsible showrunners in that, as much as we want to go in any creative direction that serves our fancy, we do know that this is network TV and we have to hit a certain bar. We told ourselves after the first year, the second year had to improve on the first year or we would start going down a lot. In our senses, we want the third year to improve on the second year. Sometimes quality doesn?t necessarily connect up with ratings but sometimes it does.

THR: Will there be changes in storylines or characters? roles as a result of this?

RK: A lot of people responded to the Matt Czuchry and Archie Panjabi relationship. I think we would try to show more of that and try to create even more drama there. We felt that was slightly a backburner relationship. It was there, but it didn?t cook as high as we could [have]. We want to look at some subjects like nepotism and Alicia being a mentor to somebody else at the firm, so we?d probably look towards a character like that. What?s fun is [what] Diane, the Christine Baranski character, was to Alicia; it?d be fun to see how Alicia is towards someone underneath her.

THR: Has there been a storyline that you weren?t sold on in the beginning that ended up moving forward anyway?

Michelle King: I don?t think we move forward on things until we?re sold. There are certain things that we recognize as being slightly creative risks and we move forward hoping it will turn out alright, like Cary sticking at the S.A.?s (state attorney?s) office.
RK: Oh yeah, you?re right. He was only supposed to be at the state attorney?s office for the first four episodes this year. [Laughs] We actually liked it so much and what it did to Cary was we would always have these threats that he would come back but in fact, it felt right that he was our antagonist, but an antagonist we liked.

THR: Which episodes were the most difficult to accept?

RK: There was an episode called ?Killer Song? that was a premise we had when we were originally pitching the show two years ago. I have a feeling the show grew beyond that premise and us trying to bring back one of the original premises, it might have been a mistake. It really fell in a straight-ahead procedural zone that the show doesn?t inhabit. It was well-directed by James Whitmore, well-acted by all the actors, we just thought it didn?t kick it up a notch.

THR: What is the most challenging part in balancing the procedural element with forwarding each character's story?

RK: The biggest difficulty is 42 minutes. You really have to do it in such a collapsed period of time that you have to be almost impressionistic about the procedural because you rely on the audience?s understanding of the causal effect so you don?t have to fill in every beat only because you start running out of time.
MK: The good news is that the audience really is that sophisticated, that sometimes you can give a beat here and there, particularly towards the end of the case and they really do understand what?s going on.
RK: It?s still difficult because you still want some emotional engagement, but the emotional engagement is more about what?s happening with Alicia?s private life. You don?t want to overwhelm it with a client who has another set of emotions because at a certain point, the emotional weight of that starts weighing down the show.

THR: Are you already eyeing guest stars?

RK: I have an advent calendar of all The Wire actors. We have been through, I don?t know, 11 or 12 of The Wire actors, so we?re going to keep running down the line until everyone from The Wire is on the show. ?

THR: Has the network or studio ever said to you, ?We want you to work this case into a storyline??

MK: No, they?re extremely supportive and very much in hearing what we put forth.
RK: We obviously want to bend the rules as much as you can and have surprises. For example, we did the Hugo Chavez episode. We went to them fairly early -- months before -- saying, ?Is this alright?? We got the legal rules down before we started writing, but they?ve never come to us and said, ?Would you do something about this case??

THR: Regarding the Social Network episode, how do you ride that line between remaining relevant and dramatizing headline stories?

RK: We never wanted it to be ?ripped from the headlines? because it feels like one could do that to use as a jumping off point [for] procedural twists and turns. We wanted the show to be criticisms and satires of what?s going on in the world.
MK: It also feels like other shows that use ?ripped from the headlines?-type things are going for above-the-fold news stories and we typically don?t. Ours are more like Page 3.
RK: We did one [episode] that could have been seen as being as similar to what happened with Al Gore. What was interesting was that a woman who accused someone of sexual misconduct ? because she didn?t fit the stereotype of a crying victim ? might not be seen as a real victim. That was the premise of it. It obviously got the added zing, hopefully, of trying to play on current events.

THR: How has TV changed in the past decade?

RK: Quality is supposed to be seen as being purely a cable phenomenon these days, which is very unfortunate. When everything is not meant to be too serialized, everybody is looking to cable to be doing the adventurous things. There?s a preciousness sometimes to cable, which I think can stultify. Not all shows, I think Justified obviously has escaped that, Sons of Anarchy and Breaking Bad. But there?s a hothouse flower quality that can come to cable too, just by the very fact that it?s supposed to be artistic. We really feel sometimes like we?re a whorehouse: "Let everything go and let?s do what we can." It?s much more of a fun carnival attitude of just, ?OK, let?s not take it too pretentiously, let?s just have fun."

THR: Was The Good Wife ever pitched to a cable network before landing at CBS?

MK:?No, never. We only went to network.
RK:?In many ways, you?ll see the design beneath the Alicia Florrick character, that the design being that there are going to be cases. We obviously liked that because it seem to be more an imitation of life because in life, you don?t just have time to be upset about what?s going on in your personal life, you then have to go to work. We actually embraced that, but I think that makes it more of a network than a cable show.

THR: What would be the best cable home for it if it wasn?t on network?

MK:?Whoever would have it.
RK:?[Laughs] To almost answer the question would be to ignore how well the CBS fit was. ... I love the way AMC is pushing the boundaries and we sometimes feel like we?re pushing the boundaries too with politics. So much of what you expect of politics is politics based on the candidate or?The West Wing. What I love about AMC is that it?s always on the cutting edge of the next thing, and we think with the subject matters we?re addressing, we?re trying to be the cutting edge for what?s going on in the 21st century.

THR: What can viewers expect in the last three episodes of the season?

RK: It?s going to pick up right where it left off with Alicia finding out about Peter and Kalinda. We?re going to see what the next six hours hold up. You?re going to find through the last three episodes, three components of Alicia?s life. Each episode will concentrate on one of those components: Peter Florrick, her husband; Kalinda Sharma, her best friend; and Will Gardner, her boss. You?ll see how the repercussions of this knowledge now plays itself out on those three fields.

NUT says analysis of Department for Education figures shows ?21m was paid to
five firms between last April and February

The head of one of the country's biggest teaching unions has accused the
education secretary of spending ?21m on consultants while he cuts school
budgets.

Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, said
her union had analysed the Department for Education's spending based on
figures published on its website.

Blower told her union's annual conference that the analysis showed Michael
Gove had paid ?21m to five private firms between last April and February. The
union claims a further almost ?5m was awarded to three other private
companies.

Blower said she feared much of the ?21m had been taken from state schools and
used for free schools. Free schools are one of the coalition's flagship
education reforms and are founded by parents, teachers, charities and
companies. They operate out of local authority control.

A Department for Education spokesman said spending on consultants had been
"slashed" under the coalition government. In 2009-10, more than ?74m had been
spent on consultants, he said. But, when figures are published for the last
financial year, they will show spending on consultancy ...

Nancy Conrad On Education Innovation: Turning Geeks Into Rock Stars Is A Game Changer

Last week President Obama spoke at Facebook, emphasizing during the townhall that the?US needs to be bullish on Science and Math education if we are to pull out of the recession, ?We want to start making Science cool. I want people to feel about the next big energy breakthrough and the next big Internet breakthrough the same way they felt about the moonwalk,? he said.

Taking off on that idea, Nancy Conrad, the wife of late astronaut Peter Conrad, has founded the Conrad Foundation in the memory of her husband. Peter was expelled from one school in the 11th grade because he had dyslexia and then went on to graduate from Princeton and walk on the moon because he was taken under the wing of another educator who saw promise in the young man.

Nancy Conrad wants to give other kids with a penchant for entrepreneurship their ?moon shots,? or the opportunity to get funding and actualize their ideas; Because of this the Conrad Foundation puts on the Spirit of Innovation Awards and Innovation Summit annually, attempting to foster a love of innovation in kids between the ages of 13 and 18.

To attend the Innovation Summit, high schoolers across the country are invited to enter the three year old competition, which ends up flying in 27 finalists to NASA Ames to pitch their startups to judges in one of three categories: Aerospace Exploration, Clean Energy and Cyber Security. The winning team in each category receives a 5K grant to fund their project.

While building the ?innovative workforce of the 21st century? is an ambitious goal, after attending the extremely professional finalist presentations today it?s obvious that spotlighting kids who have a passion for innovation and technology is a fundamental step in turning our education system around.

?There?s so many problems, we?re not running out of problems,? Conrad said emphasizing that you need to get kids excited about Science, Math and Technology in order build a viable workforce. ?When you?ve got juiced kids who really want to do something, they don?t know there?s a box. And then all they do is think outside the box. This is where geeks turn into rockstars, and that?s the game changer. That?s where you can change the culture of students.?

Lindsay Lohan Begins Serving Her Community Service Sentence

A few weeks ago we learned that Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 120 days in jail and 480 hours of community service for violating the terms of her probation and while she is appealing the jail portion of her sentence, she seems anxious to get started on serving the community service portion of her sentence. The judge ruled that 320 of the 480 hours of community service MUST be served at the Downtown Women?s Center here in LA, CA. Lindsay got the call late yesterday that she could come in for orientation ? and, surprisingly, she quickly got her buns downtown to start the process of serving out her community service hours.

Lindsay Lohan got a call late this afternoon from the Downtown Women?s Center ? the place she?ll be doing her community service ? telling her there was an open spot for orientation at 5 PM ? and Lindsay took them up on it. Sources tell us Lindsay was downtown and just completed her orientation. She has not started the community service, but that will happen this week.

At least on the surface, it looks like Lindsay is serious about serving out her hours. My guess is that she may be hoping that the judge will be softened by her zeal to complete her community service hours and may lesson the time she must serve behind bars in jail. I highly doubt any such thing will happen but even if the full 120 day jail sentence is enforced, we all know she won?t really have to sit in jail for that long. But, I am happy to see that she appears to be taking this part of her sentence (at least) very seriously. The Downtown Women?s Center offers aid to homeless and low income women and provides a very important service for the needy. It?s not totally clear what kind of work Lindsay will be doing for the center but any help is welcomed by the center, I?m sure. I?ve said it before but it *is* possible that L. Lo is *finally* ready to clean up her act and get her life in order. Maybe she?ll learn a thing or two from the less fortunate people she?ll be serving at the Downtown Women?s Center. It?s never too late to turn one?s life around ? hopefully this is the beginning of a whole new Lindsay?

Al-Qaida's Resilience May Mean Its Survival

Al-Qaida is going through its first leadership succession in more than 20 years.

Zawahiri is clearly poised to step into bin Laden's shoes. He has the street cred of being a dyed-in-the-wool terrorist ever since he was a teenager.

The terrorist group started in the summer of 1988 with two men at the top: Osama bin Laden as its head, and Egyptian Ayman al-Zawahiri as his second in command. And like any good management team, the two made contingency plans should anything happen to them. Just what those plans were is likely to become clear in the coming days and weeks.

"Osama bin Laden's death is something that he himself foresaw well over a decade ago," said Bruce Hoffman, a terrorism expert at Georgetown University. "In a series of interviews in the late 1990s, he had said that he not only welcomed his martyrdom but had prepared so there would be thousands of Osamas who would follow in his footsteps."

There may not be thousands of Osamas, but there certainly are a good number of followers, and U.S. officials are rushing to identify the group's new emerging leaders now. Certainly bin Laden's deputy, Zawahiri, is still a force in the organization. He has a rich terrorism pedigree, dating back more than 30 years when he was tried as one of the alleged masterminds of the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.

"Zawahiri is clearly poised to step into bin Laden's shoes," said Hoffman. "He has the street cred of being a dyed-in-the-wool terrorist ever since he was a teenager."

Bin Laden's Shoes Will Be Quickly Filled

Zawahiri is hardly alone. There are others. U.S. officials say al-Qaida's arm in Yemen poses the most serious threat to this country. Among its members is a radical imam named Anwar al-Awlaki. He was born in the U.S. and has become the voice of the violent jihadi movement. He has a huge following on the Internet and is likely to goad young men to action in the coming days.

Hoffman says that while Awlaki may not have bin Laden's wide appeal, he has his fingers on the pulse of a core demographic that al-Qaida needs: young people.

"Terrorists depend on the young people to radicalize and recruit," Hoffman said. "And Awlaki speaks to them." While Awlaki doesn't have bin Laden's stature, he will likely be one of the key people to carry on his message now that he is gone.

Awlaki is thought to have quite a record already. U.S. officials say he helped recruit the young Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who tried to blow up Northwest Flight 253 on Christmas Day 2009. He is alleged to have played a key role in the cargo bomb plot late last year, which also originated from Yemen. U.S. officials expect an attack to avenge bin Laden's death in the coming days, and al-Qaida's arm in Yemen may be the best positioned to strike. Hoffman says the plot is probably already in the pipeline.

"The more professional terrorists already have the plans, and now they are going to move to implement them effectively," he said.

How Much Does Bin Laden's Death Really Matter?

Al-Qaida has called on affiliates do its dirty work in the past. In 2002, when the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan sent bin Laden and Zawahiri into hiding, al-Qaida leaders sent word to their affiliates. They told them to launch attacks against the West. That fall, a car bomb exploded in Bali outside a popular tourist nightclub, killing hundreds. An Indonesian terrorist group with ties to al-Qaida claimed responsibility.

Lt. Col. Reid Sawyer, the director of the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point, says the U.S. is already bracing for what will come next. "The attack may not be tomorrow, it may not be the next day, but it is almost certain there will be a retaliatory attack," he said. "So we need to maintain our vigilance against that and not let our guard down a week after the death has passed."

Which raises the question: If al-Qaida still has the ability to strike the U.S., how much does bin Laden's death really matter?

Sawyer says it is still too early to tell what bin Laden's death is going to mean to the organization in the long run. "Al-Qaida has always been and will remain a very much decentralized phenomenon," said Sawyer. "It is an organization that has lived for 24 years and has gone through several mutations. The question now before us is what is this next mutation and what will it look like into the future?"

Sawyer says if bin Laden had been killed in Afghanistan eight years ago in the caves of Tora Bora, al-Qaida might well have died with him. Now the organization is diversified enough it could weather bin Laden's death ? and hardly miss a beat.

Ukeoma is the murdered National Youth Service Corp, NYSC member in Bauchi. He was killed because on the day of the Presidential Election he prevented some under-age registered "voters" from voting and that attracted the ire of some adult voters in the polling unit. Some CPC adults demanded he hand over the unused ballot papers to them but he refused. He was almost lynched but for the prompt intervention of the Policemen attached to his polling centre who escorted him to the INEC office. He then became a target for attack.

He was later Killed in a Bauchi police station where he was taking refuge with other youth corpers while serving his country.

Elombah.com learnt that members of the NYSC are fleeing crisis-prone local government areas in some states in the north six days to the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections.

Many of the corps members, especially in Katsina and Bauchi states, are taking refuge in army barracks and the NYSC orientation camps while some have travelled out of states like Kano, Borno and Kaduna and back to their home states or Abuja out of fear that they were no longer safe in Northern Nigeria.?

A youth corper who fled Nassarawa state told elombah.com he is not going back. ?Another said he only escaped death "by whiskers".

Another text message in circulation says: "DO NOT LEAVE... YOUR HOUSES,No more CDS or Meetings! until FG removes every SINGLE CORPER(dead or alive)from the NORTH and reform NYSC. Don't think cos u r not there,those r our brothers/sisters/friends/children out there....they(FG)Have from Now till monday to do that! PARENTS and kind hearted NIGERIANS Pls SUPPORT/ENDORSE this COURSE. Pls RE-BROADCAST, paste on Facebook, send as sms,tweet it till FG gets the message! what we sign to was "UNDER THE SUN AND IN THE RAIN" not in "TEARS AND BLOOD & MUTILATED BODIES" tell every corper u know to stay back and remain at home!!!!"

The Bauchi state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Amana Abakasanga, had confirmed the death of 4 corps members and added that 26 out of 51 corps members posted to Jammare, Giade, Misau, Azare, Dambam and Itas Gadu areas were rescued by the police and another 20 still missing.

But some of the corps members said at least 11 of their colleagues had so far been murdered in the crisis.?

One of them said they had ?decided not to take part in the election again since the government cannot protect us.??

He also claimed that they had not been paid the money promised them by INEC.

The fate of the ?missing? corps members was still unknown.

In Katsina State, for instance, traumatised corps members have deserted Daura, the hometown of the Congress for Progressive Change presidential candidate, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, and other crisis-prone towns such as Funtua, Kankari, Jibia and Malumfashipita.?

It was learnt that armed security agents escorted seven commercial buses that conveyed the corps members from Daura to the state NYSC orientation camp in Katsina.

The corps members who had spent three nights at the Daura police station were said to have contributed N150 each for the trip.?

Violent protesters had set the ?corpers lodge? known as Danbuka Local Education Authority Lodge, in Daura ablaze on Sunday in the orgy of violence that gripped the state after the poll.?

Meanwhile Punch Newspaper reports that that their correspondents, who visited the NYSC orientation camp in Katsina observed that there were over 500 corps members there. More reportedly arrived the camp from different parts of the state after our correspondent left at about 4pm on Thursday.?

Corps members, who acted as presiding officers in the presidential elections, were mostly the target of attacks in many communities in the North.

One of them, who gave his name simply as Ikenna, said he lost everything he had.?

?We cannot go back to that place (Daura). We cannot risk our lives because of the N7,000 that INEC will pay us.? Ikenna said.?

Another corps member added that but for a friendly taxi driver, who alerted them, they would have been burnt alive.?

?He (taxi driver) started shouting in front of our lodge that ?they (rioters) are coming, they are coming,? but we didn?t know what he was talking about until they nearly got to us,? he said, declining to give his name.?

In Funtua, another NYSC member, who pleaded anonymity, said he saw the charred remains of a neighbour who shared a building with him after the house had been burnt by the rioters.?

He said that he managed to flee and vowed never to go back to Funtua.?

?I just want to go back home. All my credentials are gone. As it is, the only property I have is my mobile phone,? he lamented.

The story was the same from the other corps members from Malumfashi, Kankara and Jibia.?

Anjolaoluwa, a female corps members from Oyo State, said she might never recover from the trauma.?

Amidst tears, she told one of our correspondents how rampaging youths attached their residence in Funtua and burnt down the place.?

?Many of them just came and started beating us. We had to jump over the fence and ran to the main road. I lost everything, including my certificates and laptop,? she said.?

PUNCH said the state Coordinator of the NYSC, Mallam Abdul Taura, who declined to respond to inquiries was at the orientation camp on Thursday afternoon to address the corps members.?

Taura told them that they were safe as security was guaranteed at the camp.?

In Bauchi State, corps members also deserted the troubled areas in the state for fear of further attacks by irate youths.?

This came just as Governor Isah Yuguda assured them of adequate security in the state. He also relocated over 150 of them to the State Security Service Training School for safety.?

The premises of the state secretariat of the NYSC is deserted except for a few workers who were going about their official duties.?

One of the workers, said, ?Today (Thursday) is supposed to be their CDS (Community Development Service) day but as you can see, none of them is around. Since it is no longer safe for them to move around, it is better they stay where they will be safe.??

At NYSC headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, the members of staff were mourning.?

Most them, who clustered in and around the lobby of the building were overheard discussing the deaths of some of the NYSC members in hushed tunes.?

Reports say hoodlums protesting the defeat of Buhari in the April 16 Presidential election killed 200 people in six northern states.?

When contacted on the threat by some corps members to boycott the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections scheduled for Tuesday, the NYSC Deputy Director (Public Relations), Mrs. Chynwe Ojukwu, said the issues involved revolved around policy.

?The Director-General (Maj.-Gen. Ismaila Tsiga) has travelled to Bauchi to assess the situation. When he comes back and is ready to make any pronouncement, we will let you know.??

iOS 5 updates expected to be carried over-the-air, at least for the Verizon iPhone

Having spent a good part of our day yesterday negotiating with iTunes and downloading a whopping 666.2MB file to update our iPhone to version 4.3.3 -- a version, we might add, whose sole claim to fame is the removal of things -- we know well the pains of updating Apple's mobile software. Those aches, however, may soon be coming to an end. 9to5Mac has multiple sources informing it that Apple and Verizon are scheming to start delivering iOS updates over the air from this fall, or just as soon as iOS 5 is made available. Untethered OS updates are a familiar feature to users of other smartphone operating systems and even the iOS-infused Apple TV, but getting Apple's mobile devices up to date has so far always required going through the company's own cable and software.

There's no reason to believe this wireless update feature will be limited to Verizon, mind you -- that's just where the informants are coming from in this instance -- though Apple will almost certainly have to alter the file sizes of its updates. We can't think of many carriers who'll be happy to push more than half a gigabyte of data per user per update. Additionally, since iTunes currently acts as the major backup hub, 9to5Mac speculates Cupertino must be working on a cloud backup service as well, which would seem a very sensible idea. Of course, that doesn't paint a very happy or busy future for iTunes, but so what?

Defense Rests In Trial Involving Murdered Journalist

In Oakland, Calif., the prosecution and defense have rested in the trial of a man accused of ordering the murder of a well-known journalist. Chauncey Bailey, an editor for a local community paper, was gunned down in August 2007. Prosecutors say Bailey was killed because he had run afoul of the leader of a local Black Muslim group.

The death of Osama bin Laden raises lots of questions about the future of al-Qaida. Well, counter-terrorism expert Daveed Gartenstein-Ross says if we consider al-Qaida itself dead, it's at our peril.

His point: Bin Laden's strategy for defeating a superpower is well-entrenched in al-Qaida affiliates. And that strategy has, at its core, bankrupting America. Mr. Gartenstein-Ross directs the Center for the Study of Terrorist Radicalization and is author of the forthcoming book "Why Al-Qaida Is Winning." Thanks for coming in.

Mr. DAVEED GARTENSTEIN-ROSS (Author, "Why Al-Qaida Is Winning"): It's my pleasure.

BLOCK: You write, for Foreign Policy magazine, that Osama bin Laden's notion of economically bleeding the United States goes back to lessons he learned in Afghanistan, backing the Arab mujahedeen against the Soviets. Why don't you walk us through what that underpinning is?

Mr. GARTENSTEIN-ROSS: This was his first experience in fighting a superpower on the battlefield. And on the one hand, he saw the Soviet Union not just leave Afghanistan in defeat but the Soviet empire itself cease to exist in 1991.

He thought he had played a significant role in bringing the Soviet Union down, and the only connection that can be drawn between the Soviet Union dissolving and the Afghan-Soviet War is the economic impact that it had, that is the mujahedeen bled the Russians for years, until the Soviet Union collapsed under the weight of its own expenditures.

I'm not saying this is the right interpretation of history, but it's how he saw it.

BLOCK: When you look at what Osama bin Laden said over the years about this goal to bankrupt the U.S., what did he say? How did he say he would go about doing that?

Mr. GARTENSTEIN-ROSS: He said multiple things. I personally divide it up into about four different stages. At first, he linked terrorist attacks quite broadly to harming the United States.

In the very first interview that he gave after the 9/11 attacks, he talked about how the United States had lost 16 percent of the value of its stock market. The stock market, he said, trades at $4 trillion. So if you multiple $4 trillion by 16 percent, you get $640 billion. He factored in lost work and said the price tag is no less than $1 trillion. And he'd actually given a lot of thought to the exact economic cost.

Now, the second phase, I would say, is the bleed-until-bankruptcy phase, where you try to get America and its allies drawn into bleeding wars in the Muslim world.

The third phase, I would say, is a tax on oil, which in his initial declaration of war with America he said would be off-limits as a target because the oil wealth of the Muslim world would be the wealth of the coming caliphate.

And then finally the strategy of 1,000 cuts. This was a phrase that was used after the U.S. economy collapsed in September, 2008, and the thinking is that smaller, more frequent attacks can drive up the U.S.'s cost of security and cause it, like the Soviet Union, to collapse under its own weight.

BLOCK: That is a fascinating example. When al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula bragged about the package bombs that it had sent that were intercepted, that operation was called Operation Hemorrhage. And they wrote afterward that it had cost only $4,200 to send the package bombs. They estimated that it cost Western countries billions of dollars in new security measures. This, they said, is what we call leverage.

Mr. GARTENSTEIN-ROSS: Right. There is a real discrepancy between what an attack costs them and what it costs to defend against it. And look not just at the direct economic outlay of recent attacks but also the second-order and third-order consequences.

So there's - Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab boarded a plane in Amsterdam with a bomb in his underpants. Now, that's something that you can't defend against through traditional means, and that necessitated either full-body scans or else intrusive pat-down searches when you're looking for the bomb.

It's actually a very smart strategy. And particularly after bin Laden's death, if we don't understand what they're doing, it's going to be very, very difficult to defend against.

BLOCK: Your book title, that we mentioned, "Why al-Qaida is Winning," should there be a corollary to that: and what the U.S. can do about it?

The competition brought together some of the world's best big-mountain snowboarders and skiers (including Mike Basich, who served as our exclusive Tailgate correspondent,) to throw down in the Chugach mountains. The video covers the top three runs in both men's and women's skiing and snowboarding with a little help from Social Distortion and Iron Maiden. For more information on Robert Johnson, stay tuned to Weekend Edition Saturday for a piece on The Complete Original Masters: Centennial Edition. Until then, here's some historical context on Johnson's song "Hellhound on My Trail" and an introduction to Mississippi Delta blues.

During a screening of Les Blank's The Blues Accordin' to Lightnin' Hopkins in a class a couple months ago, the blues finally found me. Sure, I'd heard the blues before. I'd even once considered myself something of a 12-bar blues master during a week or two of middle-school guitar lessons. But what did I have to worry about as a preteen churning out blistering, half-tempo solos over my teacher's C7s, F7s and G7s? The frustration of 9 o'clock bed times and algebra homework? Hopkins' blues were something else entirely: the voice of deep and hard-earned sorrow. It was that voice that drew me toward the birthplace of the blues in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, and according to a friend, there was no place else to start other than the music of Robert Johnson.

On first listen, it was clear that if I was looking for the blues, Robert Johnson had them in abundance. He twists his voice into worn whines and raspy howls of affliction, telling tales of no-good women and the fear of sinking into the clutches of the devil. The plucked notes of his guitar could practically tell these stories alone, caught up in grief and regret all their own while sliding and bending in tandem with his laments. The bass notes chug along, keeping the itinerant Johnson traveling and rambling. I listened as he jumped trains to flee memories of unfaithful women and went on the lam to dodge the hellhounds of the devil snapping at his heels.

Although most of The Complete Recordings' 41 tracks are derivations of the 12-bar blues nearly indistinguishable by my ear, a few began to stick out in my mind specifically ? not for some vague d?j?-vu familiarity that the blues evokes, but because I knew I'd heard them before in some form. I heard Eric Clapton's iconic riff under Johnson's rough-around-the-edges vocals in "Cross Road Blues," while his words rose in pitch, transforming into the soaring howl of Robert Plant in "Travelling Riverside Blues" and "The Lemon Song." Even a song I'd recently come to love with the belief that it was an original, The Rolling Stone's "Love in Vain," had come first from the mouth of Robert Johnson. What Johnson's take lacks in the slick arrangement of Keith Richards' lonesome slide guitar whining atop the steady chug of Charlie Watts' drums, it more than makes up for in the sheer sadness of Johnson's dejected croon, crying alone on the platform at the train station with only his guitar for company.

But even as I recognized his strong presence in the style of some of my favorite musicians ? and even as I was drawn to his cutting, mournful wails while my toes tapped along to his tales ? it was harder to put my finger on exactly what Johnson had to say to me all these years after he first sat down to put these songs on record in the 1930s. He compares his lost lovers to broken phonographs and stray milk cows, moans when another man takes a woman for a spin in his Terraplane and keeps a .32-20 handgun. Were those divides not great enough, even the recording quality is foreign to ears that grew up in an era of rampant studio shining and polishing. It would be easy for me to enjoy Johnson as some kind of haunting specter or disembodied voice ? an ambassador of a time and sorrows long past ? the decades of separation between me and his words made obvious by a constant hiss in the background punctuated by pops of the vinyl.

But then his voice would reach out from under lost cultural touchstones and crackling records and grab hold of me. In the second take of "Rambling on My Mind" ? when he cries, "I will never forgive you anymore / You know you did not want me / Baby, why did you tell me so?" ? our differences simply become lost in a shared knowledge of the anger and embarrassment of wasted time and the desire to turn and run, never to Mister or "Miss So-and-So" again. When he wails, "I mistreated my baby, but I can't see no reason why / Every time I think about it, I just wring my head and cry" (in "When You Got a Good Friend"), he may be singing about his regret, but he's voicing my own, too. It's not poetry; there's no abstruse wordplay or layers to sift through. But it's bold, simple phrasing, sung in a tone that cuts right through with its unwavering despair and gives voice to things I feel in their most elementary forms in a way that I never could.

Listening to The Complete Recordings on the centennial of Johnson's birth, it's clear that, while context may change, feelings do not; Johnson's voice weighs heavy with them. Whether it's the low, yearning groan of "Come on in My Kitchen," the paranoia-laden laments of "Hellhound on My Trail" or the anguished cries of "If I Had My Possession Over Judgment Day," it's hard to find a relatable emotion that did not manifest itself in Johnson's bruised tone so many years ago.

Chris Mark and Jacqueline Emerson have landed roles as the District 5 tributes in Lionsgate?s upcoming film adaptation of Suzanne Collins? Hunger Games trilogy. Mark will portray the unnamed tribute boy, while Emerson is set as Foxface, described as a girl with red hair and a slim face.

While picking up a drink at a local gas station here in SoCal, Shia wiped his mouth with his t-shirt (cuz clearly the lad doesn?t carry a handkerchief for such occasions) and inadvertently gave us a peek of what?s been hiding under his clothing. I gotta say, Shia?s grown up to be pretty hot these days.

Now, Shia here may not be as ripped as Jason Momoa in Conan the Barbarian but he ain?t lookin? too shabby. NEW YORK ? The absence of ?Will You Love Me Tomorrow? from Baby It?s You is conspicuous. Whether it was rights refusal or a cost issue, it?s odd that a musical built around the Shirelles would make no mention of one of the early-?60s girl group?s two No. 1 hits. But that omission is symptomatic of a show that has a void where its narrative backbone and heart should be.

This depressingly artless construct tries to follow in the footsteps of Tony-winning commercial phenomenon Jersey Boys, which legitimized the jukebox musical and tapped into the nostalgic baby-boomer market with its Frankie Valli hit list.

The rudimentary book for the Shirelles show was co-written by Floyd Mutrux and Colin Escott, the team behind last season?s still-running Million Dollar Quartet. Assembled around a legendary jam session uniting Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley, that show is basically a concert masquerading as a dramatic musical. But it?s almost Chekhovian compared to Baby?s It?s You.

Beyond the fact that one of them is named Shirley (Christina Sajous), we learn very little about the four individual members of the Shirelles. That?s because the show is actually about Florence Greenberg (Beth Leavel). A New Jersey Jewish housewife chafing against her kitchen confinement, Flo broke into the music industry with a teenage African-American vocal quartet discovered by her daughter, Mary Jane (Kelli Barrett), in a Passaic schoolyard.

Mutrux and Escott take a ham-fisted stab at fashioning Greenberg into a pre-feminist pioneer in an industry controlled by men. She also defies convention by leaving her male-chauvinist husband (Barry Pearl) for black songwriter and record producer Luther Dixon (Allan Louis) at a time when mixed-race relationships were not widely accepted. But the trajectory of neither the Shirelles? brief blaze of glory nor of Flo and Luther?s semi-clandestine romance is rendered compelling here.

Playing a DJ named Jocko as well as impersonating various singing stars, Geno Henderson comes on at intervals to establish a timeline by reciting a few Wikipedia bullet points about the year in question. But social context is as sketchy as character development.

A Tony winner for The Drowsy Chaperone, Leavel is a fine singer and gifted musical-comedy performer who deserves better than this stereotypical cutout. When her husband shoots down her dreams to remind her that her place is at home, Florence sighs, ?Mama said there?d be days like this.? Cue song.

No attempt is made to establish a personal bond with the Shirelles, so when the group stops charting and Flo moves on, the sense of a relationship coming to an end is missing. Nor does the family conflict resonate; Mary Jane?s estrangement from Flo and their reunion are covered in a single number.

Leavel is done no favors in the looks department either. In her lacquered wigs and costumer Lizz Wolf?s fussy outfits, Flo looks like a runner-up on RuPaul?s Drag Race. Anna Louizos has built a deluxe multi-tiered bandstand with moving platforms for the musicians, but mostly the set serves to frame the exceedingly literal projections.

Biggest disappointment is the music. Songs are dropped in with the randomness of a late-?50s/early-?60s playlist set to shuffle mode. The show takes some of the great American pop tunes of the 20^th century and homogenizes their transcendent joys and heartaches into bland karaoke. Numbers almost invariably are chopped into fragmented presentations, interrupted by dialogue or repurposed as Broadway-ized musical soliloquies.

For a show about a woman who carved her career on having a great ear for a crisp, catchy hit, it grates that the songs are so carelessly handled, with period vocal authenticity often compromised by American Idol-era melisma flourishes. Don Sebesky?s orchestrations also stray from the distinctive sound of the day.

Mutrux shares directing duties with Sheldon Epps, artistic director of the Pasadena Playhouse, where the show had a 2009 run. But the integration of book scenes and musical numbers is clunky in the extreme. And the choreography of the co-creator?s wife, Birgitte Mutrux, calls to mind cruise-ship entertainment.

Through his American Pop Anthology production banner, Mutrux is developing other jukebox shows. But on the basis of Baby It?s You, artists who care about the way their back-catalogs are represented might want to run and hide.

NEW YORK ? Tenderly dismantling the romantic mythology surrounding 2006's indie smash Once, The Swell Season chronicles the surprise musical success of that movie's stars Glen Hansard and Mark?ta Irglov? and presents a couple that, however deep their bonds, can't live a storybook life for long. An easy sell with viewers who fell for the original film (and the albums it spawned), the doc by Nick August-Perna, Chris Dapkins and Carlo Mirabella-Davis does right by both fans and subjects and could make a profitable arthouse run.

Fans will know in advance that Hansard and Irglov?, still partnered in music, didn't survive as a couple. But the film begins with them very much in love -- her giving him a haircut in a modest room while he marvels, "It's a great life we have, isn't it?" We soon watch the pair at the seaside, running naked into the surf like kids getting away with something.

But from the start, the filmmakers offer Q&A sessions with each singer individually. Though at first we're hearing childhood anecdotes and musings on fame (success came overnight in her case but was hard-earned in his), the solo interviews set the stage psychologically for the breakup to come.

The two spend a satisfying chunk of time recalling the musical spark that led to the Oscar-winning song "Falling Slowly" and resulting success with descriptions of that chemistry are borne out with present-day tour footage. Too successful, in one respect: The youthful vulnerability that makes Irglov? so endearing behind a microphone hobbles her at the backstage door, where she can't get comfortable taking photos with fans. Hansard, who gladly accepts any interaction with his new admirers, tires of his partner's reluctance.

Hansard, in turn, suffers more philosophical difficulties with fame ? a "what's it worth?" ennui that not only creates friction with his partner but makes for poignant dinner-table scenes with the family he clearly adores. His working-class mother can't stop talking about being the only woman in town whose son has an Oscar, and instead of accepting the pleasure he has given her, Hansard frets over this abstraction of achievement.

If the handsome black-and-white film sensitively captures frictions between characters who continue to love and respect each other, it isn't obsessed with this discomfort zone. The filmmakers are happy for diversions, like a tour-bus dance party and a post-gig song-swapping session where the group's Irish crew go ballad-for-ballad with the stars.

Performance footage may be briefer than some in the audience expect, but what there is is choice, capturing the contrasting kinds of vulnerability -- hers shy but gutsy, his eloquently raw -- that make the pair distinctive. A closing image, with Hansard in the spotlight while Irglov? watches contently, can be read as either a newfound equilibrium or a suggestion that the duo will eventually follow different musical paths. Either way, Swell Season makes a bruised-but-sweet flip side to Once's dreamy love song.

Robert Lipsyte has spent the past six decades as a print, radio, TV and online journalist. He also writes young adult fiction. But the lion's share of his career was as a columnist for the New York Times. Lipsyte first worked for the newspaper known as the Gray Lady when he landed a summer job as a copy boy in the sports department.

Robert Lipsyte has just written a memoir called "An Accidental Sportswriter." It will be published on Tuesday and he's in our studio in New York. It is so nice to talk to you again.

Mr. ROBERT LIPSYTE (Journalist, Author, "An Accidental Sportswriter"): Yeah. I'm so glad to be back.

HANSEN: Can it really be called accidental? I mean, you applied for the job. You saw an ad in the newspaper and, I mean, what did you think you were getting into?

Mr. LIPSYTE: It was totally accidental. I had just graduated from college. I was on my way to get an advance degree in probably something important like romantic English poetry in California, which was as far as I could imagine myself from Queens. But I needed a little more money. And so I bought the New York Times - never read the paper; I heard it got good classified ads - and it was an ad for something called editorial assistant.

So, I go up there and they kind of are very condescending. You know, there are all sorts of Rhodes Scholars waiting for this job. But while you're here, fill out an application, which I did and went back home to Queens. As I walked in the door, my mother said, Bobby, you got a crank call. Some man called and said if you show up tomorrow night and pass the physical, you can start work at the New York Times immediately. And, you know, the physical was showing up.

So, that was the first great accident. I figured I'd be there for two months before I sought my fame and fortune in California. And I hated the job, didn't like the people in the sports department - I had never been a sports fan - but I loved the paper. I fell in love with the paper viscerally because at 9 o'clock at night when the great presses started to roar in the basement, the whole building started to shake.

And up on the third floor where the sports department was, it would come up my legs and into my loins. I guess you had to have been an English major to be that crazy. So, that was the first major accident.

The next really big accident was Cassius Clay...

HANSEN: Yeah.

Mr. LIPSYTE: ...now known to you as Muhammad Ali.

HANSEN: Well, let me ask you about that. I mean, that was your first big assignment, was the heavyweight boxing championship between Sonny Liston and Muhammad Ali, then known as Cassius Clay. Why was he called Gaseous Cassius at that time?

Mr. LIPSYTE: Well, I think that the more traditional sportswriters were put off by the fact that he never stopped talking. He was the Louisville Lip; he was Gaseous Cassius. You know, the truth is that in any kind of logical succession, he really didn't deserve to fight for the championship at that time. He had not really, you know, beaten the correct contenders on the way up - you know, the one, two, three and four contenders.

But Sonny Liston was considered such a monster that nobody would come pay to see his fights because he knocked everybody out in the first round, that the only way they felt that they could goose the box office was with this beautiful sacrificial creature, who was really best known - he had, you know, actually the year before he had been on the cover of Time magazine because he spouted his doggerel, his poetry, in coffeehouses in Greenwich Village. So, I mean, he was a kind of a wonderful sports character. But he got absolutely no credit, you know, for being a great athlete and a boxer.

And as odd as this may sound, he was even criticized for his lack of traditional approach to ring tactics. At the time, the correct way, if somebody's throwing a punch to you, you slip the punch, which means you move your head from left to right so that it goes harmlessly over your shoulder. He leaned back away from the punch, which everybody said, you know, would lead him into ultimate destruction against the ropes, which it never did.

So, he talked too much. He treated the old-time sportswriters with, you know, a certain kind of disrespect. He was funny. He was just wonderful to be around. And I remember that week leading up to the fight, you know, deep in the back of my head thinking, oh, if only he could win, everything in the world would change, including my career - and that's what happened.

HANSEN: Yeah. Gay Talese was a sports columnist at the New York Times when you were the copy boy, right?

Mr. LIPSYTE: Right. He was a reporter.

HANSEN: A reporter.

Mr. LIPSYTE: Yeah.

HANSEN: And you write a lot about him. How did he contribute to you as a writer?

Mr. LIPSYTE: Oh, I mean, he was the reason that I stayed. As I said, I hated being a copy boy at the Times. I kept going to school at the same time. I was always tired. I wasn't really sure I was cut out for this. But going to this desk - he was a night rewrite - and going to his desk and being in the school of Talese and listening to what he had to say; you know, how you interviewed peopled, the question you ask, how you prepare. I kind of loved to go out on cocoa runs for him because I knew I could bring, you know, the hot cocoa back to his desk and stand there as he drank.

He was very generous and kind with his time. And ultimately, when I decided I just couldn't take it anymore - I was going to school from nine to five; the job was, like seven to three. I was tired. I was not advancing. I was unhappy. He was the first person I told that I was going to quit. And, you know, he sipped at his cocoa and looked at me and in his thoughtful way he kind of forms his sentences, he said, well, I can understand your doing that, although I think it's a great mistake. I think you're just the kind of young man the Times is looking for these days and I think you'll be very successful here.

But let me tell you, if you do decide to leave, I will give you $5,000 against 10 percent of your earnings as a freelance writer, because I think you'll do really very well. Liane, that's all I ever had to hear. The fact that Gay Talese, you know, he believed in me - I was then unable to believe in myself. I hung on for a couple of more months, was promoted and by 21 I was a reporter. I still see Gay.

And in writing "An Accidental Sportswriter," I went back to interview him some months ago. And over a course of a couple of days we talked and talked. And finally I kind of screwed up my courage to ask the big question. I reminded him about the $5,000. And I said, were you serious? Is there any possibility you could have been kidding? And he said, sure.

(Soundbite of laughter)

HANSEN: Oh, dear.

Mr. LIPSYTE: Yeah. So, another happy accident in my career.

Nokia devs have started porting key applications and services to Windows Phone, with mapping and navigation getting a highlight mention, while there will indeed be a "Nokia-branded global application store that leverages the Windows Marketplace infrastructure." Notably, this is described as a single portal where devs can serve their apps to users of Windows Phone, Symbian and Series 40 devices -- it'll be interesting to see how they work out the details of that. There's also confirmation that Microsoft will pay Nokia multiple billions of dollars as part of the agreement, some of which will be spent on completing an intellectual property-sharing agreement between the two teams. So yes, the third ecosystem is well and truly on its way.

Pediatricians can use a five-minute questionnaire to identify many 1-year-olds with autism, according to a new study in Journal of Pediatrics.

But the screening test also flags a whole lot of babies who aren't autistic.

Even so, the result provides "an exciting proof of concept," says Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, in a statement. NIMH helped pay for the study.

For many years, researchers have suggested that autism treatments would be more effective if they began at an earlier age ? though studies have yet to show whether that's the case. Today, many children with autism don't receive a diagnosis until they are 5 or even older.

The new study involved 137 pediatricians in the San Diego area and more than 10,000 of their 1-year-old patients. Their parents were asked to fill out a form with 24 questions before they saw the doctor. Questions covered things like whether a child makes eye contact, and how they use words and gestures.

There were 184 babies who failed the screening test and went on to receive more extensive tests. Of these, only 32 were eventually diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder ? though many more were found to have some sort of language or development delay.

So most of the kids flagged by the test don't have autism. And the test apparently missed a lot of kids who will eventually be diagnosed with autism.

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that about 1 percent of children in the U.S. have an autism spectrum disorder. That suggests the screening test missed about two-thirds of children on the autism spectrum.

Syrian Security Forces Storm Towns, Witnesses Say

Syrian troops in armored vehicles and tanks stormed the southern town of Daraa early Monday and opened fire, the latest crackdown on a five-week uprising against President Bashar Assad's authoritarian regime, witnesses and activists said.

Daraa has become an epicenter of the protest movement, which kicked off in the town more than a month ago after authorities arrested a group of teenagers who scrawled anti-regime graffiti on a wall. Since then, more than 300 people have been killed across the country as the anti-government demonstrations have swelled.

Activists on social media posted footage of what they said were troops firing early Monday throughout Daraa. The sound of heavy gunfire punctuates the footage, as well as the labored, frightened breathing of the activist filming the footage. The activist repeats the date, the location and says: "The army forces are entering Daraa. They are shelling the city of Daraa."

Also Monday, witnesses said Syrian security forces were opening fire in the suburbs of Damascus.

There was no immediate word on casualties, and telephone lines in Daraa appeared to have been cut.

The video could not be independently verified and all witnesses spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. Syria has banned nearly all foreign media and restricted access to trouble spots since the uprising began, making it nearly impossible to get independent assessments of the situation on the ground.

But the rising level of violence in Syria ? more than 120 people have been killed since Friday ? brought calls from the watchdog group Human Rights Watch for a U.N. inquiry.

Syrian security forces have detained dozens of opposition activists since Saturday as authorities turned to pinpoint raids to quell the revolt.

The strategy, described by a rights activist, appeared aimed at rattling the opposition's leadership and showing that the state's ability to conduct sweeping arrests has not changed despite abolishing nearly 50-year-old emergency laws last week.

The raids were concentrated around the capital Damascus and the central city of Homs, a hotbed of demonstrations against Assad's authoritarian rule, said Ammar Qurabi, head of the National Organization for Human Rights in Syria.

"These people are not being arrested in a legal way. They are being kidnapped," Qurabi said, claiming the plainclothes security agents did not have formal arrest warrants.

Qurabi did not have full figures for those detained, but said at least 20 people were arrested in Homs.

A resident in the Damascus suburb of Douma said at least five people were taken into custody and authorities cut Internet and telephone lines.

Assad has blamed most of the unrest on a "foreign conspiracy" and armed thugs trying to sow sectarian strife. The state-run news agency SANA said 286 police officers have been wounded since the uprising began. It did not give further details.

But possible cracks could be emerging from within.

Two members stepped down from the provincial council in the southern region of Daraa, which has the highest death toll in the country. The resignations came a day after two lawmakers and a religious leader from Daraa also turned their backs on Assad in disgust over the killings.

Such internal rifts have added resonance since nearly all opposition figures have been either jailed or exiled during the 40-year dynasty of the Assad family.

Wonderland Software will become Zynga Mobile UK and will be based near Guildford, a famous game development center in the UK. Shanghai Film Festival Launches Mobile Film Competition

But the mobile phone film competition?s aim is not political, but ?to enable more young filmmakers the opportunity to display their talent on the international stage,? organizers said.

Just as the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television must approve all films the SIFF will show in theaters, so too will the mobile films be vetted carefully.

To make it easy for amateurs to participate, organizers lowered the bar for required filming equipment and the technical standards in hopes of inspiring creativity on the smallest of screens.

In addition to cooperation with China Mobile, the festival will also work with a number of film and television companies to help develop the new festival program.

Winners of the mobile film contest will be given the chance to participate in SIFF master classes and their works will be recommended by SIFF organizers for participation in upcoming short film festivals around the world.
